"Gaver" Populus deltoides x nigra, is another fast growing poplar tree that can be grown for fuel. "Gaver" has smaller more delicate foliage than Tricobel
Sold as 3ft cuttings.Poplar is grown using the same planting method as willow, using 1ft setts (unrooted cuttings) planted through a woven ground cover or mulch mats or 3ft cuttings planted into bare cultivated soil. Note Planting distances between trees should be adjusted to allow for eventual size of tree.
Because Poplar easily achieves heights of 40ft in ten years it is also used for windbreaks and to lift gamebirds.
Gaver has not suffered significantly from poplar rust . Rust diseases have devastated some UK poplar plantations in recent years, where planted with non rust resistant varieties. Initial growth is 4-6ft per year. Height after 10 years 40-50ft
